BuyVsRental's calculators and articles are for general education. They are not financial, investment, tax, legal or real estate advice, and they don't take your full situation into account. Before a major decision such as buying a home, talk to a qualified professional — a lender, tax adviser, financial planner or attorney.

BuyVsRental is not a lender, mortgage broker, real estate agent, landlord or financial adviser.

Results are estimates

• Every result depends on assumptions about the future — home prices, rents, investment returns, interest rates, inflation and taxes — that nobody can know. Real outcomes will differ, sometimes a lot.
• Local figures come from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey. They are survey estimates with margins of error, averaged over five years, so they trail today's market. We flag areas where the samples are small.
• The mortgage rate is a national weekly average; the rate you're offered depends on your credit, loan and lender.
• Tax rules are simplified and change over time. The calculator assumes federal rules for a typical household and ignores state income taxes.

We work hard to keep the math and data correct, and the methodology shows exactly how results are calculated. But we can't guarantee that any figure is complete, current or error-free. You use the site at your own risk, and BuyVsRental isn't responsible for decisions made based on it.

How we make money

BuyVsRental doesn't currently show ads, use affiliate links or receive payment from lenders, landlords, brokers or any company mentioned on the site. No one pays to influence our results.

If that changes, this section will be updated first. Ads will be clearly marked, affiliate links will be labelled where they appear, and our calculators' results will never depend on who advertises with us.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity to measure how the site is used and to find problems. They don't pay us and don't affect any result. What they collect and how to turn them off is in our privacy policy.

Links to other sites

We link to government data sources and other sites for reference. We don't control them and aren't responsible for their content.
